An interview with Patrick Meaney, the writer and director of The Vanishing Tour starring Amber Benson.

The Vanishing Tour is a brand-new horror thriller written and directed by Patrick Meaney. It recently had its premiere at the Marina Del Rey Film Festival in Los Angeles. Amber Benson plays Dominique in her first major on-screen role since 2019’s The Nightmare Gallery. Amber has worked with Patrick before; she also starred in 2018’s House of Demons, which he wrote and directed.

I was keen to know more about The Vanishing Tour. I contacted Patrick, and he was kind enough to give me an interview, and we discussed The Vanishing Tour, working with Amber again, and much more.
Picture
Joe – AB.TV: Could you tell us more about your newest project, The Vanishing Tour?

Patrick:
The Vanishing Tour is a horror/thriller film about a struggling indie band who gets carjacked and stranded in the middle of the desert, where they stumble upon a mysterious compound. Amber’s character Dominique lives at the compound with her husband Richard (played by Brendan Wayne aka The Mandalorian!), and they’re keeping a secret that will have very dangerous consequences for all involved.

Joe - AB.TV: How have you incorporated lessons you’ve learned in your previous films into this one?

Patrick: I definitely have. It’s always interesting to watch the films you’ve made with an audience, and to see the reaction. I know with the first film I did with Amber, House of Demons, we had a lot of people who loved the film, and some people who found it a little hard to get into, so it emphasized to me the importance of really grabbing people right from the start.

With this film, I was very inspired by going to a lot of concerts, and seeing how in a great concert, it feels like the show evolves and grows as it goes on, and keeps things varied and always exciting. So I approached this movie kind of like structuring a setlist, where I wanted every scene to have a suspense or horror tension within it, and to vary those tensions a lot over the course of the film.

Joe - AB.TV: Was there any particular group or band that inspired Logline? (the band in movie)

Patrick: Two of our stars, Mina Tobias and Nicolette Norgaard, wrote the song for the band, and we developed the aesthetic together. I had a playlist of songs that we referenced, and some of the artists on there were Charlotte Gainsbourg, Nine Inch Nails, Bat for Lashes and Smashing Pumpkins.

The actual performance in the film was inspired by the theatricality that Kate Bush had in her 70s era tour that you can see on YouTube.

I’d love to have had Amber sing in a scene, but unfortunately it didn’t really make sense for the story.

Joe - AB.TV: What kind of challenges or odd experiences did you face while shooting in the desert?

Patrick: We faced many. Our original plan was to shoot the whole film at a ranch property outside LA. On our second day of filming, people started to smell smoke, and the fire marshal came and told us we better evacuate. That night, a fire in the area almost burned down the house we were supposed to film in.

Thankfully it didn’t, but we were not allowed to return to shoot for several days. Thankfully our makeup artist had a property in the area that wound up working perfectly for several scenes, and we shot there for a few days before returning to the original property.

Beyond that, the heat was definitely tricky. There are several scenes set in a shipping container, and it must have been over 110 degrees in there. But, we found creative ways to keep everyone cool.

Picture
Joe - AB.TV: Can you tell us more about Amber’s character, Dominique, and what role she plays in the movie?

Patrick: After the band is stranded, they find Amber’s character living out in the desert. Amber’s character is mysterious. Externally, she seems very nice and sweet, and one of the characters absolutely loves and embraces her, but the others are a bit more sceptical and seem to think she’s hiding something. The question becomes, is she just a really sweet, nice person, or is she like a witch in a fairy tale, luring these people in for a sinister agenda.

I had so much fun watching Amber bring this character to life, and she gets to be a little bit scary, a little bit sexy and a little bit sweet.

And, it was particularly fun to watch her acting with her husband in the film, played by Brendan Wayne. Brendan is the suit performer for the Mandalorian, and also John Wayne’s grandson, and brings that old school cowboy swagger to his part. But he has a sweet spot for Amber’s character, and I think people will really enjoy watching these two genre icons acting together.

Joe - AB.TV: Given that Amber has been working more as a writer recently, did you write Dominique with her in mind, or how did you approach her for the role?

Patrick: I didn’t specifically think of her from the start, but as the script started to come together, I was like, this would be perfect for Amber. It’s a real honor for me that she wanted to be a part of it.

Joe - AB.TV: You've collaborated with Amber several times now. What is it about working with her that keeps bringing you back?

Patrick: There are a couple of things. Filming, especially on an indie schedule, is a challenge, but she always makes it so much fun, and sets such a joyful tone for everyone. Even just watching the raw footage, before we slate in, she’s smiling and joking, and when things can be stressful, that’s the energy you want. She’s also very relaxed and chill about whatever wacky thing we throw at her to do.

And I think a lot of that comes across on screen as well. Her sweet and genuine energy  her walking the line of scary and sweet and being excited. I know all the other actors always loved working with her, and people who didn’t get scenes with her were sad they missed out.

Joe - AB.TV: What was your favourite or most memorable moment of filming?

Patrick: There’s a scene at the end of the film that was a real all hands on deck moment. It involves the most elaborate costumes and makeup/hair of the film, as well as unusual set design, and featured nearly all the main characters, and we had to shoot it all in half a day before the sun went down. The actors were coming out of makeup one by one, so we had to shoot coverage separately before finally getting to the wide shot. So, every single cast and crew member were giving it their all, and we finished it right as the sun went behind a mountain.

And, after the premiere, most people said it was their favorite scene, so it seems to have all paid off.

Joe - AB.TV: What conversation do you hope audiences are having on the drive home?

Patrick: One cool thing we’ve heard from a bunch of viewers is that they want to watch it again right away. The movie really goes on a big journey with a lot of twists and turns, so people want to look back and see how they got there.

Joe - AB.TV: Looking ahead, is there a particular story or project you've always dreamed of bringing to the screen? Also, what else are you working on at the moment?

Patrick: I’m developing a project now with Auden Wyle, an amazing young actress who made her film debut in The Vanishing Tour, and I’m really excited to work with her again. It’s a similar genre, and my hope is to have several of the other actors back as well, including Amber!

Joe - AB.TV: The Vanishing Tour recently had its premiere at the Marina del Rey Film Festival. Are there any plans for a wider release?

Patrick: Yes, we’re working on setting up more festival and event screenings, as well as setting up distribution. It’s hard to know an exact timeline, but there will be more happening as the year goes on.

Joe - AB.TV: Where can fans find out more about The Vanishing Tour?

Patrick: The Vanishing Tour Instagram is @thevanishingtour, and we’ll be updating with screening and distribution news as it happens.

A big thank you to Patrick for taking the time to talk to me. If you would like to learn more about House of Demons, read my 2018 interview with Patrick by clicking the link here.

Amber Benson to star in the upcoming movie The Vanishing Tour, which will have its premiere on Saturday, the 20th of June in Los Angeles.

The Vanishing Tour is a new horror thriller that has been written and directed by Patrick Meaney. If his name is familiar to you, that is because Patrick also wrote and directed House of Demons in 2018, in which Amber starred as Maya.

In recent years, Amber has focused her career on writing, including book series such as The Calliope Reaper-Jones series and The Echo Park Coven novels. As well as several television projects for the Hallmark Channel and The Lifetime Network. Amber also co-wrote audio drama Slayers: A Buffyverse Story.

Long-time visitors to the site may remember that Patrick was kind enough to give me an interview when House of Demons was released. When Patrick posted some information about the movie premiere, I decided to reach out and see if I could bring you some more information about Amber’s return to the big screen.

Patrick was kind enough to give me some more information about The Vanishing Tour. The movie centres on Logline, a struggling band who are carjacked and left stranded in the desert. They seek shelter at a mysterious compound which houses a dangerous secret.

Amber plays the part of Dominique. Patrick confirmed to me that Amber has a bigger role than she did in House of Demons, with lots of fun scenes.

Amber had a memorable cameo in 2024’s I Saw The TV Glow. The Vanishing Tour, however, will be her first major on-screen role since she played the part of Professor Samantha Rand in 2019's The Nightmare Gallery.

In a recent post on social media, Patrick confirmed the details of The Vanishing Tour's premiere. He wrote:

My new movie The Vanishing Tour will be premiering June 20th as part of the Marina Del Rey Film Festival.

We'll have the cast and crew out for the screening, so don't miss a chance to be the first to see the movie on the big screen at what is definitely the LA movie theater most likely to be haunted.
PREMIERE DATE: Saturday June 20th, 2026

TIME:
Red Carpet: 6:30pm
Screening: 7:30pm
Cast + Director Q&A: 9 PM
After party: 9:45 PM - Detail TBA

LOCATION:
Lumiere Cinema at the Music Hall
9036 Wilshire Blvd.
Beverly Hills, CA 90211

To get tickets for the premiere of The Vanishing Tour, click this link to visit the Marina Del Rey Film Festival website.

I'm planning on creating a dedicated page for The Vanishing Tour, and there will be more updates, including more info on the exciting cast that will star alongside Amber.

Please spread the word about this exciting new film, and if you're attending, I hope you have a fantastic night.

I have some hugely exciting news to share. ‘I Saw The TV Glow’, featuring Amber Benson, is set for a nationwide release later this month in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

‘I Saw The TV Glow’ premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and then had a limited number of preview screenings in the USA before a nationwide release on May 17, 2024.

Last month, ‘I Saw The TV Glow’ made its UK debut in London, where it was given four preview screenings. Now, the website Digitalspy.com has revealed that ‘I Saw The TV Glow’ will be released nationwide across the UK and the Republic of Ireland on Friday, July 26th, 2024.

‘I Saw The TV Glow’ centres on Owen (Justice Smith) and Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine); two teenagers trying to navigate their way through life and high school. Owen and Maddie bond over a shared interest in a supernatural TV show. When the TV show is cancelled, Owen’s reality begins to blur with the fictional world in which the show is set.

To read the Digital Spy article and view a trailer for the film itself, click here.

I haven't been able to find a full list of cinema screenings for ‘I Saw The TV Glow’ at the moment. My advice would be to check your local cinema listings. If possible, I will put together a list of cinemas where the film is being shown. If there is a screening near you, then why not email me or get in touch via social media the links are in the website header.

It was back in 2022 that Amber revealed she had joined the cast of ‘I Saw The TV Glow’. This is the first time Amber has appeared in an on-screen role since she starred as Professor Samantha Rand in 2019's The Nightmare Gallery.

Following the completion of these successful series Amber has since written a number of both fiction and non-fiction film projects for television.

I was lucky enough to meet Amber again at a Convention in the UK in 2022. During a Q&A session with fans, I asked Amber if she could share more about ‘I Saw The TV Glow’. She said, "If you like genre shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Supernatural, you will love this film." A big thank you to Amber for being kind enough to answer my question!

The trailer is an intriguing watch and I can see why the project was interesting enough to tempt Amber back into an on-screen role. Sadly, Amber doesn't appear in this particular trailer but if and when new versions are released or we get any official photos of her in the film I will share them here. According to IMDb.com Amber will be playing the role of “Johnny Link's Mom.”

I'm pleased that more fans will now get a chance to see Amber's return to an on-screen role.

A big thank you to Samantha for letting me know about this exciting news.

Amber was the special guest on the most recent episode of The Jordan, Jesse, Go Podcast which was released in the run-up to Christmas.

Amber joins hosts Jordan Norris and Jesse Thorn to talk about Slayers: A Buffyverse Story which was co-written, co-directed and stars Amber Benson. Amber herself is very modest and she plays down her starring role, instead highlighting the contribution of others.

Trust me when I say that Amber is definitely a star, she gives an incredible performance as Tara Maclay. If there are some fans out there who haven't listen to Slayers: A Buffyverse and are worried that Tara won't have a big role to play. Then let me put your mind at ease, she is a big part of the story and as you would expect Amber does it with great care and sounds terrific.

Amber is amazing, I urge you to listen. I went slightly off the topic of the podcast but I felt it was important to highlight Amber’s incredible contribution both in creating and as a cast member.

Jesse, Jordan and Amber also talk about Christmas and their plans. They discuss Christmas movies, Amber has starred in one and has experience of writing a festive film for Hallmark. Amber enjoys true crime stories and she has written several movies based on real life events for The Lifetime Network. Amber has written a number of novels and short stories along with co-writing and creating the Ghosts of Albion online series and novels. Jordan, Jesse and Amber discuss her novel: The Witches of Echo Park. Penguins, otters and ice cream cake are just some of the other topics up for discussion in this unique podcast.

My friend and fellow Amber fan Laragh gave me a heads up about this podcast. She also sent me a post from Reddit in which co-host Jordan Morris describes Amber as “a hilarious delight” and describes it as “not so much an interview, just kind of a goofy chat around.” The conversation does take plenty of twists and turns in this funny and unusual chat. This is definitely not your typical interview but that’s what makes it so enjoyable.

I have posted the link below so you can so you can listen and there is also more information on the podcast and other options for downloading and playing it on your devices.

Please Note: The podcast does contain some strong language and discussion of mature themes.

This is a really enjoyable listen that made me laugh and for Amber fans it's a great way to spend a relaxing hour. There will be some more updates coming to the site in 2024 but for now I'd like to wish everyone A Happy New Year.
