Fans in the UK can now watch Amber Benson as Tara Maclay in Buffy the Vampire Slayer via the free streaming service ITVX.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is now available in the UK, free, on ITV’s streaming service ITVX. Earlier this month all seven seasons were added to ITVX, which is free and supported by adverts. It’s the first time it's been on free-to-air television or free streaming service since 2022 when it was previously available from another UK broadcaster Channel 4.

ITVX can be watched on a range of devices including laptops, tablets, smart phones, smart TVs, games consoles, and more. There is also a premium option available if you wish to watch without adverts. For more information on how to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer see the hyperlink below.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer on ITVX

This will give Amber fans the chance to see her play the iconic and much-loved role of Tara Maclay who made her debut in "Hush" in season 4. Buffy remains much loved by fans even after more than two decades.

Buffy is still attracting new generations of fans even today so with this in mind, if you are a first-time viewer, there will be some spoilers below.

Amber played Tara Maclay for three seasons. Her shy smile, honesty, and loyalty made her a big hit with fans. Amber's dramatic exit from the show in 2002 was extremely controversial, especially among the LGBTQ community, and still provides a big talking point for fans to this day.

Tara & Willow (Alyson Hannigan) were the first long term openly gay couple on a US network television show. Amber played the role of Tara with both honesty and sensitivity, which earned her much deserved praise.

The role had a big impact on her life, and Amber continues to support the LGBTQ community. Amber’s impact on the Buffyverse goes far beyond her role on screen. Amber has co-written Willow and Tara comic books with her friend and fellow author Christopher Golden. Amber has also written her own short story about Claudine who was the Slayer at the time of the French Revolution.

In 2023, Slayers: A Buffyverse Story was released – an Audible Exclusive podcast series. It’s set within the Buffy verse thirteen years after “Chosen”, the final episode of the TV series. Amber co-wrote, co-directed, and reprised her role as Tara Maclay along with several of her co-stars and friends returning to the original roles they played in the TV series.

Hello everyone,

As regular visitors to the site will know this section is usually reserved for the latest Amber news. However, as with my previous post, I’m catching up on some great content from late last year.

Why you ask? Well, when ‘Slayers: A Buffyverse Story’ was released in October 2023 (for more information visit our brand-new dedicated Slayer page – just click on the hyperlink) Amber did a number of interviews about this exciting project and due to work commitments and my personal circumstances at the time, I was having a hard time keeping up with all the excellent content.

One of the reasons I built this site was to be a resource for fellow fans. A place to find out more and provide links to the content that is still available for you to access and enjoy. I recently took a holiday from work, so I decided it was time to catch up! Now on to the post itself:

In December 2023 Amber was the guest on the ‘Son of a Binge’ podcast hosted by Reshma Gopaldas. Each month she invites guests to talk about their latest project as well as what shows they are currently bingeing.

Reshma begins by asking Amber how ‘Slayers: A Buffyverse Story’ came about and what it was like to be back in the world of the Buffyverse.

Amber also gives us the lowdown on what she likes best about her fellow cast members; working in the multi-verse and what the situation is for some of the characters when we first meet them, as well as the challenges and practicalities of recording under COVID-19 restrictions.

The cast is full of returning Buffy stars, but we are also introduced to a new Slayer, Indira Nunnally played by Laya DeLeon Hays. Amber talks about the role Laya plays and how she is key to the story.

Tara Maclay, the character Amber played in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, was killed off in controversial circumstances in 2002. Amber discusses what it was like returning to play a character that both she and the audience love so much. As part of the Slayers story takes place in an alternative reality, Amber discusses the situation this version of Tara finds herself in. Also, why it was so important to Amber to keep all of Tara’s core values from the TV version – specifically her goodness, kindness, and empathy still being present.

Reshma also invites Amber to play a game of Stake, Marry, Kill. Just a heads-up: stake doesn't mean what it usually does. These are just some of the things they discuss in this entertaining podcast.

To listen to ‘Son of a Binge’, click the link below. Please note the conversation/interview contains discussion of mature themes discretion is advised for younger listeners.

It's also important to note that this podcast was recorded during the strike held by the members of SAG-AFTRA and The Writer’s Guild of America which meant that Amber couldn't directly reference the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show at the time.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable listen and it's a must for Amber fans. Sorry about the delay.

Joe

An Interview with Amber Benson as part of an episode of ‘The Comic News Insider Podcast’

Hello everyone,

As regular visitors to the site will know this section is usually reserved for the latest Amber news. I've taken a few days holiday and I decided it was time to go back and look at a couple of things that I didn't get the opportunity to post about when they were first released.

In October 2023, Amber made an appearance on the ‘Comic News Insider Podcast’. This episode is not a typical episode with a one-on-one interview situation. It was recorded at one of the press events as part of New York Comic Con 2023 where ‘Slayers: A Buffyverse Story’ was one of the featured panels.

The podcast features interviews with Amber Benson, Christopher Golden, Charisma Carpenter, Emma Caulfield Ford, Juliet Landau, Laya DeLeon Hayes, James Marsters, and James C. Leary.

Amber and Christopher talk about how ‘Slayers: A Buffyverse Story’ came about, the process of recording the series and why creating an authentic experience for fans was so important to them.

Amber talks about her emotions at having Tara alive again and making sure that even though this version of Tara does some dark things, her goodness, kindness, and empathy are all still there. She highlights why keeping the integrity of the character of Tara was so important as she means so much to fans. Amber also discusses working with Juliet and there are some laughs along the way too.

Charisma discusses a new role for Cordelia while Emma talks about the process of voicing three different characters. Juliet talks about Drusilla as a character and how she drives a lot of the action and working with Buffyverse actors that she didn't get the chance to work with on screen.

Laya discusses being the newcomer into this world and how welcome she was made to feel by the cast and crew. She touches on working with Amber and how she was able to have conversations with her as part of the process while recording.

James Marsters and James Leary talk about stepping back into their roles and the multiverse nature of this new world that Amber and Christopher have created.

Before I go any further, I just want to let people know there is a lot of interference on the audio recording itself and at times it can be very hard to hear certain parts. Comic News Insider explained to fans about this both on their website and as a disclaimer at the start of the recording itself.

Years ago, I studied media so I know first-hand that sometimes technical problems can arise. I just wanted to make people who want to listen are aware. I would recommend listening through headphones rather than trying to play via speakers.

The ‘Comic News Insider Podcast’ is available to listen to from the link below to hear that recording itself open the page and click on the blue hyperlink below the photo.

https://www.comicnewsinsider.com/2023/10/episode-1449-nycc-slayers-a-buffyverse-story-.html

Despite the time that has passed and the issue with the recording, I wanted to post it here as I’m trying to create a full resource of all things relating to ‘Slayers: A Buffyverse Story’.

If you haven't already done so, please check out this link to a petition to Save Slayers: A Buffyverse Story. (click the hyperlink).
The petition was set up by Beth Ricketson. I don't know Beth personally but as a fan of both Amber and Buffy the Vampire Slayer I wanted to let fans know about the petition. When I listened to the podcast and the excitement of all of the cast and journalists covering this event I didn't understand Disney's decision to cancel the show.

Despite the sound problems, this is definitely worth a listen for Amber fans.

Sign The Petition To Save Slayers: A Buffyverse Story

This is an update I genuinely never expected to write. Especially after its huge success. But the Walt Disney Company has cancelled Slayers: A Buffyverse Story.

Co-writer and Co-director Christopher Golden announced the sad news via social media on Wednesday, the 21st of February. He also commented that as far as he was aware Disney has given no official reason behind the decision to cancel the series.

Both Christopher and Amber, who of course co-wrote co-directed, and starred in the series, have expressed their pride at what they've been able to accomplish. Along with their thanks to the cast and crew the team at Audible, and Buffy fans for their support, as well as the disappointment at not being able to continue.

Slayers: A Buffyverse Story was a hit with audiences when Audible released it on the 12th of October, in the USA, UK, and Australia – and at one point was the number-one listened-to product in all three countries simultaneously. It was later named the number one product on Audible.com for all of 2023.

A panel with the cast and crew at New York Comic-Con in October followed which received a great reception too. Given strong commercial sales and excitement around the project both Amber and Christopher were optimistic that season two would be given the go-ahead.

Fellow cast members had also indicated they were excited about the prospect of a second season. Fans of the audio drama, me included, were certain that season two was on the horizon. Creators, cast and crew, and fans have been left shocked and disappointed by this decision.

A petition has already been started to urge The Walt Disney Company (who own the rights to Buffy the Vampire Slayer) to reconsider their decision and give Slayers the second season it deserves, and the fans crave.

The petition was set up by Beth Ricketson. I don't know Beth personally but as a fan of both Amber and Buffy the Vampire Slayer I wanted to let fans know about the petition as I have already done on our social media channels. We wanted to show our support and help spread the word.

For those of you who may be hearing about Slayers: A Buffyverse Story for the first time here is what you need to know:

This immersive audio drama has been co-written by Amber Benson and Christopher Golden who have been friends and writing partners for many years. They also co-direct it along with Kc Wayland.

Amber also returns to play Tara Maclay for the first time in more than twenty years. A character that has meant so much to so many fans all over the world. Amber is joined by a host of friends and former co-stars along with Buffy newcomer Laya DeLeon Hays as Indira Nunnally.

Joining them in the cast are:

James Marsters as Spike
Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia
Anthony Head as Rupert Giles
Emma Caulfield Ford Anya Jenkins & Anyanka
James Charles Leary as Clement "Clem"
Juliet Landau as Drusilla
Danny Strong Jonathan Levinson

The series is set thirteen years after Chosen, the final episode of the ground-breaking TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Now some of our favourite characters have returned for a brand-new, all-original adventure.

For more on the series click on Slayers: A Buffyverse Story category in The Latest Amber News section.

As I understand it, Audible.co.uk holds the license to make Buffy The Vampire Slayer audiobooks and audio productions. However, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is owned by 20th Century Fox which was acquired by the Walt Disney Company in March of 2019. As the parent company, Disney has to give their permission and also can block any projects featuring intellectual property they own. At this early stage, it seems as though Disney has withdrawn its support for Slayers: A Buffyverse Story meaning this series cannot continue. As I understand it Audible has yet to make any comment themselves regarding the cancellation.

The thepopverse.com highlights the rumours of a relaunch of the Buffy TV series which started to circulate a couple of weeks ago. They speculate that Disney may be concerned that two unconnected Buffy projects could “hurt one another”

Personally, this argument makes no sense to me, even if reports of a reboot or a continuation of the series on television are correct. At a rough estimate by the time they appoint an executive producer, cast all the parts, film it then get it ready for release. I can’t see it being on screen for at least two years. This is my best guess/estimate if there's anyone out there who knows more about production timelines let me know.

My first point however is that even if plans for a new Buffy television show are being developed, how can audiences be confused by a TV show that doesn't exist yet?

My second point is that other big franchises including Star Wars, Star Trek, and Marvel in particular, have had multiple television streaming at or around the same time. All focusing on different parts or set in different eras and timelines. This is important as I would imagine a new TV series would be set very close to the time it is released whereas Slayers is set 12 to 13 years after the end of the original series which would mean Slayers is set around 2015. I think the earliest a TV show could be on screen is 2026 which is a 10+ year gap in the timeline with different characters. I can't see how they would interfere with one another.

The other franchises I mentioned also have several comic books, novels, and animated series. I've yet to hear one dedicated fan of a franchise complaining about “confusion” because there are too many ways to enjoy what they love. I think media companies really do need to give their audience some credit.

My third point is even if some consumers really enjoy Slayers: A Buffyverse Story and don't watch a new series then Disney isn’t losing out because they still will be making money from the Buffy brand. The idea that a new TV show might not succeed because of Slayers running parallel and splitting the audience doesn't hold water for me.

Making a possible new TV show the only way to consume Buffy doesn't guarantee its success. At the end of the day if the audience doesn't like it they won't watch it. Instead, they’ll just get their Buffy the Vampire Slayer DVD boxset out and watch the original. If it's good enough fans will watch like and listen to both. If the new TV show isn't a success and they've already cancelled Slayers, then Disney loses out twice.

My fourth and final point is this: cancelling Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, possibly in favour of a new series, will in my view only alienate loyal fans who could be less lately to watch a possible reboot.

Sorry if I have gone off on a tangent. I’m upset and dismayed as to why it has been that it has been cancelled. As far as I'm aware we still have not been offered any official reason as to why Slayers has been cancelled.

If and when there are any further updates, I will of course share them here.

Joe

I’d like to wish Amber Benson a very Happy Birthday. Amber, I hope today and the year ahead brings you happiness and only good things.

Followers of the website’s social media feeds will know that I posted Happy Birthday messages there too of course. I also wanted to write a post here in the Latest Amber News section as well.

I've been a huge fan and have followed Amber's career for many years and in that time, I've been fortunate enough to meet her in person on a number of occasions. Indeed, I was lucky enough to meet her again at a convention in the UK in autumn last year.

Amber is not only hugely talented she's also a kind and generous person too. If it had not been for the encouragement Amber has given me, I never would have attempted many new things. I’m very grateful for all of her support and kind words.

Last year saw the release of Slayers: A Buffyverse Story which Amber co-wrote, co-directed and starred in. Click the hyperlink and scroll down the page, a dedicated Slayers page is coming soon. Amber also discusses Slayers: A Buffyverse Story in this month’s issue of SFX Magazine. For more information about this click here.

I hope that 2024 will be another great year for Amber and as ever I will do my best to keep everyone up-to-date.

I know you will all join me in wishing Amber a very Happy Birthday!

Happy New Year to everyone I have some very exciting news to kick off 2024. Amber discusses Slayers: A Buffyverse Story in the January edition of SFX Magazine which is out in the UK now.

If this is the first time you’re hearing about Slayers: A Buffyverse Story then here is what you need to know, it's an Audible Original Podcast. It has been co-written by Amber Benson and her long-time friend and writing partner Christopher Golden. Amber and Christopher also co-direct along with Kc Wayland. This is an immersive audio drama that is told over nine episodes. The story is set thirteen years after ‘Chosen’ the final ever episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Spike has infiltrated the demon underworld in Los Angeles convincing them that he has returned to his old ways. That is until he runs into Indira Nunnally (Laya DeLeon Hays) a young Slayer who has very recently received her powers. Now Spike has got to act fast, both to save what's left of his cover story and find a Watcher to guide Indira.

What's fast becoming a difficult and dangerous night takes a shocking turn when Cordelia Chase track Spike down. Except she's not the Cordelia that long time Buffy and Angel fans are familiar with, she is from a parallel universe. A world where Buffy Summers never existed and Cordelia is the one and only Slayer. Cordelia needs Spike’s help as her world is in danger from none other than Spike’s former paramore Drusilla and that's only the start of this gripping adventure.

What makes this project even more exciting is that a number of Buffy’s original cast have returned to reprise there much love roles. Including Amber who as well as co-writing and co-directing, plays Tara Maclay for the first time in more than twenty years.

In this article written by Will Salmon Amber discusses how Slayers came about and her own feelings on returning to the Buffyverse. She highlights the role of new Slayer Indira and the importance of creating a positive experience for fans these are just some of the topics she covers.

James Marsters and Juliet Landau also talk about reprising their roles of Spike and Drusilla respectively. There is also a selection of photos featuring the cast and crew including Amber taken while they were recording Slayers: A Buffyverse Story.

At the moment I've been unable to find a list of stockist for SFX Magazine but I do know it is currently available from WHSmith and Asda here in the UK (it may not be available in smaller stores). SFX magazine is also available to buy online. I have ordered a single issue from magazinesdirect.com click the link below for more details.

https://www.magazinesdirect.com/az-single-issues/6937139/sfx-magazine-single-issue.thtml

I checked and there are other websites where the magazine can be purchased as well. I don't know if they ship internationally. If anyone has any information, then please email or message me via our social media feeds. The links are at the top of the page and of course you can leave a comment on this post too.

A big thank you to friends and fellow Amber fans Samantha and Laragh both for the information about the article itself and the link for online purchases. This is an interesting article with some fantastic photos to accompany it definitely check it out if you can.

Amber Benson was the Special Guest on a Recent Episode of The Jordan, Jesse, Go Podcast.

Amber was the special guest on the most recent episode of The Jordan, Jesse, Go Podcast which was released in the run-up to Christmas.

Amber joins hosts Jordan Norris and Jesse Thorn to talk about Slayers: A Buffyverse Story which was co-written, co-directed and stars Amber Benson. Amber herself is very modest and she plays down her starring role, instead highlighting the contribution of others.

Trust me when I say that Amber is definitely a star, she gives an incredible performance as Tara Maclay. If there are some fans out there who haven't listen to Slayers: A Buffyverse and are worried that Tara won't have a big role to play. Then let me put your mind at ease, she is a big part of the story and as you would expect Amber does it with great care and sounds terrific.

Amber is amazing, I urge you to listen. I went slightly off the topic of the podcast but I felt it was important to highlight Amber’s incredible contribution both in creating and as a cast member.

Jesse, Jordan and Amber also talk about Christmas and their plans. They discuss Christmas movies, Amber has starred in one and has experience of writing a festive film for Hallmark. Amber enjoys true crime stories and she has written several movies based on real life events for The Lifetime Network. Amber has written a number of novels and short stories along with co-writing and creating the Ghosts of Albion online series and novels. Jordan, Jesse and Amber discuss her novel: The Witches of Echo Park. Penguins, otters and ice cream cake are just some of the other topics up for discussion in this unique podcast.

My friend and fellow Amber fan Laragh gave me a heads up about this podcast. She also sent me a post from Reddit in which co-host Jordan Morris describes Amber as “a hilarious delight” and describes it as “not so much an interview, just kind of a goofy chat around.” The conversation does take plenty of twists and turns in this funny and unusual chat. This is definitely not your typical interview but that’s what makes it so enjoyable.

I have posted the link below so you can so you can listen and there is also more information on the podcast and other options for downloading and playing it on your devices.

Please Note: The podcast does contain some strong language and discussion of mature themes.

This is a really enjoyable listen that made me laugh and for Amber fans it's a great way to spend a relaxing hour. There will be some more updates coming to the site in 2024 but for now I'd like to wish everyone A Happy New Year.

Last month Amber Benson and Christopher Golden appeared as guests on the Slayerfest 98 podcast to discuss Slayers: A Buffyverse Story An Audible Original podcast.

Slayerfest 98 is a queer pop culture podcast originally focused on Buffy The Vampire Slayer and its spin-off series Angel. This long-running podcast series has also moved on to discuss other popular media franchises including Marvel.

Recently Amber and Christopher joined three of the series regular hosts Ian Carlos Crawford, Ryan Houlihan, and Zachary Patton Garcia to discuss Slayers: A Buffyverse Story.

If this is the first time you’re hearing about Slayers: A Buffyverse Story then here is what you need to know. It's an Audible Original Podcast, this is an immersive audio drama that is told over nine episodes.

In this interview we hear how Slayers all started, how it developed and the process of writing the nine episodes in season one. Amber talks honestly about how she herself and indeed some of her fellow cast members were anxious about returning to the Buffyverse for a variety of different reasons. She and Christopher highlight how recording the series together in the studio helped them create a safe space for the cast and crew. Co-director Kc Wayland’s sound design also creates an immersive audio drama that draws its audience back into the world of the Buffyverse.

Amber and Christopher talk about what it was like to work with the cast again including a new role for the character of Cordelia. As well as the impact of Laya DeLeon Hays’ character Indira Nunnally. Not just the importance of her character but the role she plays in providing the audience with all important Buffy the Vampire Slayer backstory and mythology so if you're new to the Buffyverse you can jump right in and enjoy this new experience together with long-time fans.

Christopher also takes time to highlight Amber’s work in making this happen in that she helped change the conversation around Buffy from negative back to positive. Amber as always remained incredibly modest and is quick to praise Christopher too.

The interview is over one hour forty minutes long and is an incredibly detailed discussion around Slayers: A Buffyverse Story. There is a whole lot more that I could highlight but I don’t want to give it all away and I really do encourage you to listen to this entertaining and interesting discussion. I've embedded the video below because this interview isn't just a regular podcast, everyone appears via webcam which I feel really adds something to the conversation.

The video contains spoilers for the series however the point in the video where spoilers are talked about is clearly indicated by the hosts.

I apologise that it has taken me so long to post this update. I have been very busy with work and other commitments over the last few weeks. Thanks for your patience I hope everyone has a Happy New Year.
