Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Important Update:
AmberBenson.TV was shocked and saddened by allegations made against Buffy The Vampire Slayer’s creator Joss Whedon made by former cast member Charisma Carpenter on the 10th of February 2021. Charisma's allegations have been supported by Amber Benson and other former cast members too.
AmberBenson.TV does not support or condone any form of abuse or bullying and we will always stand with anyone who has experienced abuse. As AmberBenson.TV's creator I have written a post about the situation click here to read it.
In 1999, Amber joined the cast of Buffy The Vampire Slayer which is still one of the best and most influential television series in recent history! To this day, it still has an army of loyal fans around the world. I’m not going to post too many details here as the show attracts new fans all the time is available on DVD, streaming services & television.
Amber played Tara Maclay, who, after making her début in Hush, spent 3 seasons as member of the Scooby Gang.
Buffy still attracting new generations of fans even today so with this in mind if you are a first-time viewer there will be some spoilers below.
Her shy smile, honesty, and loyalty made her big hit with fans. Amber's dramatic exit from the show in 2002 was extremely controversial, especially among the LGBTQIA+ community, and still provides a big talking point for fans to this day.
Tara & Willow (Alyson Hannigan) were the first long term openly gay couple on US network television show. Amber played the role of Tara with both honesty and sensitivity, which earned her much deserved praise. The role had a big impact on her life, and Amber continues to support the LGBTQIA+ community.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer is still available on DVD and is currently and on streaming service Disney Plus here in the UK.
Amber’s impact on the Buffy-verse went far beyond her time on screen. Amber joined other cast members and reprise her role as Tara in the Buffy The Slayer: Chaos Bleeds video game. The game is available on Playstation 2, XBOX and Nintendo Gamecube. I bet you’re reading this and thinking “why would I play a game on such an old system?” The game offers far more than just the chance to slay a few vampires. The game is set in season 5, and was written by Christopher Golden & Tom Sniegoski, both of whom have written a number of Buffy the Vampire Slayer tie-in novels and comic books. Chaos Bleeds also has a ton of extras including an interview with Amber.
In 2001, Amber teamed with Christopher Golden to co-write Buffy The Vampire Slayer: “Wilderness” & “Wannablessedbe” a two part comic book. Willow & Tara decided to take Dawn for a picnic but in Sunnydale even a simple plan for a day out can be ruined by demons. This was published by Dark Horse Comics and in 2003 was re-released as graphic novel called Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow and Tara. Christopher would also go on to work with Amber on a number of other projects. (See "The Written Word" section)
2011, Buffy The Slayer Tales was released, a brand new collection of stories set in the Buffyverse. It includes “Innocent” by Amber her story is set at the height of the French Revolution. Claudine (the slayer) learns that vampires aren't the only evil lurking in the world.
In 2012, Amber continued her enduring link to Buffy as she wrote the foreword for Buffy: The Making of a Slayer (The Official Guide) A brand new book celebrating the series written By Nancy Holder. The book offers a look at the creative processes used in the series. Like Amber, Nancy is no stranger to the Buffyverse having written a number of tie in novels including novelisations of episodes from the series and original stories that were not featured in the series.
In 2017, Amber joins her fellow cast member in EW Reunites Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Entertainment Weekly celebrates the hit show's 20th anniversary be uniting almost all of the regular cast. In an exclusive 44 minute documentary PEN website. There's also article in Entertainment Weekly to accompany it. Amber and Alyson discuss their roles as Tara and Willow and the importance of their relationship to the series and the positive impact it had on society too.
This documentary is a must see for fans and the good news is it's completely free to watch just click the link below and hit play. I watched the video myself and I can confirm it does play in the UK I'm not sure about other countries though if anyone has any information on this let me know.

Slayers: Buffyverse Story – An Audible Original Audio Drama
On Wednesday the 13th of September 2023 it was announced that Amber has co-written, co-directed and will star in a brand-new immersive audio drama called Slayers: A Buffyverse Story. Yes that's right, not only is The Buffyverse returning, Amber will once again play Tara Maclay for the first time in more than twenty years.
Slayers: A Buffyverse Story is an Audible Original and will be exclusively available on the Audible platform and fans can buy it now via the UK, US and Australian versions of the website and app.
The news was revealed exclusively by Entertainment Weekly in an article written by Sydney Bucksbaum, who confirmed that this new original story had been co-written by Amber Benson and her long-time friend and writing partner Christopher Golden. Amber has also co-directed the drama along with KC Wayland, as well as returning to the role of Tara Maclay who she played wonderfully in the TV series.
Amber is one of several friends and former co-stars who are returning to their original roles for this new chapter in the Buffyverse. More on that in a moment, first here's what we know about the story so far as revealed in Sydney Bucksbaum's article click here to read it.
As it begins Spike (James Masters) has gone deep undercover in Los Angeles as he attempts to convince the forces of darkness that he is back to his evil ways. That is until his cover is compromised by a young slayer, Indira Nunnally (Laya DeLeon Hayes), now Spike must track down a watcher to guide her. That's when their paths cross with a veteran slayer from a parallel reality, a world where Buffy Summers never existed, and the one and only slayer is Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter). Cordelia is searching for help to defeat a ‘big bad’ that is terrorising her world, none other than Spike's former love interest, Drusilla (Juliet Landau)
That's all we know about the plot of the series to date, however here is the cast list so far and fans will see plenty of names they will recognise:
Amber Benson as Tara Maclay
Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia Chase
Emma Caulfield Ford as Anya Jenkins & Anyanka
James Charles Leary as Clement "Clem"
Laya DeLeon Hayes as Indira Nunnally
Anthony Head as Rupert Giles
Juliet Landau as Drusilla "Dru"
James Masters as Spike
Danny Strong as Jonathan Levinson
Laya is a newcomer to The Buffyverse, some of you may recognise her name from several projects including playing Delilah Fulton on CBS drama, The Equaliser.
As well as starring in Buffy the Vampire Slayer Amber is no stranger to writing for the Buffyverse. In 2001 she teamed up with Christopher Golden to write a two-part comic book titled, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow and Tara: "Wilderness” and “Wannablessedbe. Later re-released as a graphic novel in 2003 called Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Willow & Tara.
Amber also wrote “Innocent,” a short story set at the height of the French Revolution about Claudine who was The Slayer. This was released in 2011 as part of a collection of short stories called Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Tales.
Christopher Golden has also written within The Buffyverse, having written several Buffy the Vampire Slayer tie-in novels both during and after the show's time on the air. He also co-wrote the script for Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds videogame.
The pair have worked together on a number of other projects, including co-creating and writing Ghosts of Albion, an animated Internet series for the BBC and the subsequent novella and novels. For more information on their writing projects click on this link to The Written Word section of the website.
In an informal Q&A on his official X account (the social media platform formerly known as Twitter) Christopher revealed that Slayers: A Buffyverse Story is eight hours long and will be told over nine episodes. At the time he did say that as far as he was aware all episodes would be available on the release day of October the 12th 2023 and that proved to be the case.
What's even more exciting is that fans don't have long to wait as Slayers: A Buffyverse Story was released on 12th October 2023 here in the in UK via Audible.co.uk, the USA via Audible.com and in Australia via Audible.com.au Audible members can use a credit (plus a fee) to buy it or it is available to buy for a one-off fee for non-members. Click the appropriate hyperlink to pre-order and find out more. The charge I paid was just over £5 plus 1 Audible Credit. I don’t know if this charge is the same for everyone or changes depending on your Audible package. If anyone in the UK, USA or Australia has any more information please get in touch and let me know.
As both a fan of Amber and Buffy I'm thrilled that she has been given this fantastic opportunity to add to her impressive body of work as a writer. I’m also delighted that she is returning to star in Slayers: A Buffyverse Story. Amber has largely retired from acting to focus on writing but I'm so excited that she is returning to play Tara once again. Tara's controversial exit from Buffy The Vampire Slayer was upsetting for many fans, myself included. The fact that Amber has once again step into the role of Tara means so much to me.
